Margen de error ¿Cómo se escribe "occidental"? explora las narrativas tradicionales sobre la conquista española del Nuevo Mundo, que se ven reflejadas en los libros de texto oficiales, tratando de cuestionar la supresión de la violencia colonial y el papel de la memoria en la transmisión del conocimiento histórico.
Deconstructing a conventional history class through tableau-vivant re-enactments, hacking interventions on text-books, or counter-exercises on memory and concept exploration, all con-ducted with the participation of teen-aged students, Margin of Error. How Do You Spell “Wes-tern”? explores the traditional narratives on the Spanish Conquest of the New World as they are reflected in official texts used in schools in Spain and Latin America.
SOBRE EL PROYECTO
El proyecto tiene un carácter altamente experiencial; es fruto de una
serie de dinámicas de grupo con una selección de alumnos y profesores de
Educación Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO) y Bachillerato, registradas en
vídeo; la estructura / guión se ha compuesto a partir de la
“deconstrucción” de la estructura habitual de una clase de Historia y su
posterior reconfiguración en una secuencia de ejercicios, desde la
puesta en escena de representaciones pictóricas coloniales a discusiones
sobre algunos conceptos generalizadas (o ignorados) en la enseñanza de
estas temáticas, pasando por la memorización de textos concretos o acciones de intervención física en los libros .
The film is based on an art project developed by Magnetic Declination with a group of high school students. Aged between 14 and 17, these students came from different private, chartered and state schools in the Madrid area, and were selected through an auditioning process. Prior to the shooting of the film, whose first stage lasted for three days, the students were not informed about the nature of experience, thus participating not knowing the specific topic to be explored. During the shooting they were asked to take part in exercises resembling a deconstructed history class on the Spanish conquest of America. In a second stage, individual interviews with each of the students were filmed six months later. The interviews aimed at situating the first collective experience in a contemporary and wider framework of debate, relating to questions of migration, the current economic crisis or the nation state.
